How compensation works in direct selling, and how to read it

Quick answer: in direct selling, compensation usually consists of a margin on sales plus bonuses based on volume, once qualification conditions are met. The exact rules are in the compensation plan, and the real results are in the income disclosure.

How to read an income disclosure
Look at the typical participant, not the top ranks. Look for the median or the distribution: how many people are at each level.
Check whether the figures are before or after costs. Revenue is not the same as profit.
Note whether people who left are included.
Compare with your own situation: time, network and budget.
A simple test
Ask the person inviting you the FTC's questions: how much they earned last year after expenses, and what share of that came from selling the product to customers outside the programme.
Compensation and recruitment
According to dōTERRA, compensation is based on product sales. Check for yourself in the documents that apply in your country — and if income depends mainly on how many people you sign up rather than on product sales, treat that as a red flag (more in is it a pyramid scheme?).
Financial results are individual. dōTERRA does not guarantee income — working as an independent Wellness Advocate takes time and money, and many people earn little or nothing. We do not show example earnings.

According to the company, compensation is based on product sales, not on fees for new participants. Always check this in the current compensation plan for your country.
