What it actually is
An independent Wellness Advocate is not a dōTERRA employee. They buy products on their own account, recommend them to others and — if they wish — build a team of people who do the same. There is no salary or guaranteed hours. Registration and tax rules depend on the country (see rules and what to check in Europe).
Where income may come from
In models of this type, income is generally made up of a margin on products sold to customers and bonuses or commissions based on sales volume, usually once qualification conditions are met. The exact rules are set out in dōTERRA's compensation plan for your country — more in how compensation works.
How long it takes
There is no honest figure to give. Building a circle of customers typically takes weeks and months, not days. At the start, costs (time, products, tools) usually run ahead of revenue — work it out for yourself before you begin (the cost of getting started).
What independent sources say
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says it plainly: “most people who join legitimate MLMs make little or no money. Some of them lose money.” It also suggests asking the person inviting you about their income after expenses and what share of it came from selling to customers outside the programme.
Who it may suit
- People who already use these products and enjoy talking about them.
- Those who treat it as a side activity or hobby and can afford the risk of losing what they invest.
- People who have the time and want to learn about selling and customer service.
Who it probably doesn't suit
- If you need a secure, steady income quickly.
- If you don't want to talk to others about products or ask for recommendations.
- If you can't afford spending without a guaranteed return.
