Start with fresh air
Before adding any scent, air the home — a few minutes of through-draught morning and evening does more than the best diffuser. A scent should add to clean air, not mask it.
How to use a diffuser
- Amount: 3–5 drops in a standard room diffuser.
- Time: 30–60 minutes, then a break. Running longer doesn't give a “better” effect.
- Place: on a stable surface, out of reach of children and pets.
- Cleaning: empty and clean the tank regularly, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Simple blends for times of day
- Morning in the kitchen: Lemon plus a touch of Peppermint.
- Afternoon in the living room: Wild Orange plus Frankincense.
- Evening in the bedroom: Lavender (or Lavender plus Wild Orange).
Children and pets
Babies, small children and pets are more sensitive to oils than adults. Don't diffuse in a baby's room without professional advice, let pets leave the room, and keep oils out of reach. More: essential oils and children.
Cleaning the home with scent
You can add a few drops of citrus or Tea Tree to a mix of water and vinegar for wiping surfaces. Test on a hidden spot first and avoid wood, stone and plastics that may react to oils.
