Why short breaks make sense
Long rituals are lovely, but on a busy day they rarely fit. Micro-breaks last two or three minutes and can be woven into work, study or caring for children. Scent works like a bookmark in your calendar: when you smell it, you know it's time to breathe.
Three micro-rituals
- 4–6 breathing: inhale through your nose for four seconds, exhale through your mouth for six — five repetitions. If you feel dizzy, go back to normal breathing.
- Neck and shoulder stretch: slow shoulder circles and gentle sideways tilts of the head.
- A breath from your hands: one drop of your chosen oil on your palms, rub them together, bring them a few centimetres from your face and take a few calm breaths. Don't touch your eyes.
Which scents for breaks
- Peppermint — if you want to “brighten up”; it is a very strong oil, so a little goes a long way.
- Lemon or Wild Orange — if you prefer a lighter citrus.
- Lavender — for a pause after an especially stressful meeting.
Safety at the office and at home
- In shared spaces, ask colleagues before you run a diffuser — some people react badly to scents.
- Don't use Peppermint near babies and young children.
- For people with asthma or allergies, strong scents can be a problem; if in doubt, ask a doctor.
