Do I have to sell? Discount customer or Wellness Advocate

Quick answer: you don't have to start with selling. You can get to know the products as a customer and decide later whether to build a business. If you decide to recommend products, do it honestly and without pressure.
Two paths
Customer. You buy products for yourself and your family on the terms available to customers. You don't have to recommend or recruit anyone. Check the exact rules (including any discounts) in dōTERRA's documents for your country.
Independent Wellness Advocate. You run your own business: you recommend products, teach about them and — if you wish — support people who join your team. This is work involving sales and customer service, even if you don't call it “selling”.
What “selling” means in practice
Most often it is conversations with people who ask about oils, publishing educational content, hosting small gatherings or workshops and handling orders. It doesn't have to mean pushy persuasion. Good practice is to answer questions, show your sources and let the other person decide.
Rules for an honest conversation about products
Say that you are an independent Wellness Advocate, not a company representative.
Don't attribute healing properties to oils or promise health results.
Don't give examples of earnings or suggest that income is certain.
Don't push people to buy “just in case”.
A warning sign
Among its warning signs the FTC lists a situation where people in a network “buy more products than they want to use or can resell, just to stay active”. If anyone urges you to do that — stop.
Financial results are individual. dōTERRA does not guarantee income — working as an independent Wellness Advocate takes time and money, and many people earn little or nothing. We do not show example earnings.

Yes, you can use the products as a customer. Check the terms in your country, though, as they may differ.
Do I have to recruit other people?+
No. Building a team is optional. Note that according to the FTC, income in an honest model should come from selling products to customers, not from recruitment alone.
